When Stress Becomes Chronic

Stress is a natural part of life. In fact, stress itself isn't harmful — it's one of the body's most important survival mechanisms. Every day we adapt to physical, emotional, and environmental challenges such as work demands, exercise, poor sleep, illness, emotional events, or even skipping a meal.

This remarkable ability to maintain stability while adapting to change is known as allostasis.

To achieve this, the body activates a complex network of systems involving the brain, nervous system, hormones, immune system, and metabolism. These adaptive responses are essential for our health and survival.

The problem arises when these systems are activated continuously without enough time to recover.

What Is Allostatic Load?

Every time your body responds to a stressor, it uses energy and physiological resources. The cumulative "wear and tear" that occurs when these adaptive systems are repeatedly activated is known as allostatic load.

In the short term, this process is beneficial. For example, during exercise your heart rate increases, stress hormones are released, and your muscles use more energy. Once the challenge has passed, your body returns to its normal balanced state, known as homeostasis.

However, when stress becomes chronic, the body remains in a prolonged state of adaptation. Over time, this can reduce resilience and contribute to dysfunction across multiple body systems.

Many people continue pushing through these early changes because routine blood tests and medical imaging are often normal. Yet their body may already be signalling that its adaptive capacity is under increasing strain.

Allostatic load doesn't affect just one organ or system. Because the brain, nervous system, immune system, hormones, and metabolism are all interconnected, chronic stress can manifest in many different ways throughout the body.

Is This You?

Chronic stress and increased allostatic load may contribute to symptoms such as:

These symptoms don't necessarily mean that stress is the sole cause. However, chronic stress can increase the body's allostatic load and contribute to the development or persistence of many physical and psychological health conditions.

Why Do Some People Develop Symptoms While Others Don't?

Every person has a different capacity to adapt.

The likelihood of developing chronic health problems is influenced by a combination of factors, including:

These factors interact throughout life. When enough stressors accumulate without adequate recovery, the body's adaptive systems may gradually become overwhelmed, increasing allostatic load and contributing to chronic symptoms.

A diagnosis is often the end result of this process rather than the beginning.

Esteban’s Approach

Rather than focusing solely on where your symptoms are, I aim to understand why they developed in the first place.

As a physiotherapist, osteopath, and psychoneuroimmunologist, I take a whole-person approach to health. Alongside your physical symptoms, I consider the broader factors that influence your body's ability to adapt — including your lifestyle, sleep, nutrition, stress, movement patterns, previous injuries, and overall health history.

Understanding allostatic load shifts our focus from simply asking "What condition does this person have?" to also asking "What has happened to this person's adaptive systems that allowed these symptoms to develop?"

Together, we work to identify the factors that may be increasing your allostatic load and reducing your resilience. Treatment is tailored to your individual needs and combines hands-on therapy, movement, education, and evidence-informed strategies to support your recovery.

My goal is not simply to relieve symptoms. It is to help restore your body's ability to adapt, recover, and function at its best, while giving you the knowledge and tools to take control of your long-term health.
